I must admit that when I got my little cardboard viewer from the New York Times I looked through the little lens and couldn’t (wouldn’t) figure out the gimmick. I tossed it. But when close family member Jessica Northrop went to work for the Times on their Virtual Reality project I began to put it together, and persuaded her to give me another chance and another viewer. Read Jessica’s interview with Headset about what the Times is trying to accomplish with this innovative foray into this totally amazing technology. Far beyond putting a splash of color on the “great grey lady’s” cheeks, this represents a major shift in how they want to cover the news. VR is clearly another tool for public interest organizations who can tap this tool to bring constituents to experience the sights and sounds of the people and places they reach.
